Jwalamukhi Temple

The Jwalamukhi Temple in Baripada is one of the 51 Shakti peeths of Goddess Shakti. It has a burning blue flame emerging out of a rock chamber, which is considered to be a sign of the deity, and is therefore prayed by the devotees with much faith and belief. The Jwalamukhi Temple is devoted to the ‘Goddess of Light’, or Goddess Jwalamukhi.

The temple also happens to have a dome of gold, gifted by the Mughal Emperor Akbar. The temple remains highly flooded by tourists during the Navratri festival. It is built over a huge pond, and happens to be one of the most visited temples in the state of Orissa.

HARIBALADEV JIU (BADA JAGANNATH) TEMPLE

Apart from Puri, Lord Jagannath is worshipped as Shri Shri Haribaldev Mahaprabhu at Baripada. There goes a saying that Maharaja Baidyanath Bhanj had been to Puri to have a Darsan of Lord Jagannath. Failing to offer the demanded gold coins the king was denied to have a 'Darsan'. Another version to the legend goes like this. When the Maharaja went to Puri in rayal splendour with the accompaniment of 'CHHATRO' and 'CHAMORO' the Gajapati of Puri refused permission as it was display of higher status que over the 'Thakur Raja of Puri'. The prevailing custom then was that the devotees to Puri will come as common man without showing of any supremacy over the Gajapati 'who is Chalanti Vishnu Designate'. The Maharaja went in penance near the Atharnala, outskirt of Puri. In a dream he was ordered by Lord Jagannath to construct a temple in Baripada so that he would come down to aasuage his devotee. Showing deference to wishes of Lord Jagannath, he got constructed the majestic temple at Baripada. Like Puri, all the rituals for Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Suvadra, are perfomed here at Baripada. The Bhanja Rulers, whose royal patronage in the field of architecture was at par excellence, would be remembed for their magnificent offering to Lord Jgannath in getting built the Jagannath temple prototype of Puri.

The District of Mayurbhanj preserves many temples built in different styles of Orissan architecture, such as Rekha, Bhadra and Gauriya. Among the Rekha temples the most important are the temples of Kakharua Baidyanath at Manatri of this District and that of Lord Jagannath at Baripada. The temple of Lord Jagannath at Baripada is universally known as Haribaldev temple. It was built by Shri Baidyanath Bhanj in 1575 A.D. on the same architectural principles of Kakharua Baidyanath temple. The temple stands as a symbol of the religious favour of the Bhanja Rulers of Mayurbhanj and is regarded as the Queen Monad among the princely states during the pre-merger days.

It is made of laterite stone with exquisite designs engraved in the walls. It has height of 84'-6". A big boundary wall encirles the temple which is a replica of that of Lord Jagannath at Puri. An inscription on the temple wall states that in the year 1497 of the Saka Era this temple was built by Baidyanath Bhanj. This temple, like the Kakharua Baidyanath of Manatri is provided with Vimana, Jagamohan and Nata Mandira and is in a better preserved condition than the latter.

Besides the presiding deities, there are as many as seventeen Bedha deities consecrated in the temple. The Jagannath temple compound is provided with small cells in which the images of different religions find place. Among them may be seen beautiful images of Avalokiteswar Paraswanath and Umamaheswar. At the inner gate of this temple are found images of Jain Tirthankaras, Rishabhanath, Paraswanath and Mahavir beautifully carved out in black chlorite stone.

Besides these Tirthankaras, an image of Buddhist Jambhal has also been placed near the inner gate. In a small room within the temple enclosure is found an image of Lokeswar Bodhisattwa locally known as Anantadeva with four hands and made of black chlorite stone. The Buddhist and Jaina images in the Jagannath Temple compound make it reminiscent of the catholicity of the temperament of the Bhanja rulers and their attempt to bring about harmonious blending of different religious sectors.

There are various other pillars, images and structures both in front of the presiding deity and on the body of the temple. The walls of the Nata Mandira of Jagannath temple are decorated with pictures of mythological significance.

The Radhamohan temple at Baripada serves as 'Gundicha Mandir' of Lord Jagannath. This temple along with Rasika Raya repesents the cult of Neo-Vaishanavism which was popular in Orissa before Sri Chaitanya. This temple is provided with Nata Mandira and is beautifully painted inside as well as outside. The paintings in some of the nitches and on the inner walls can be seen even now.

Next

Ratha Yatra or Car festival of Baripada occupies second position to that of Puri. During the days of festivity small township of Baripada wears a different look with three gigantic chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Shubhadra, criss-cross of light and thronging of large number of devotees puring from different parts of this District as well as neighbouring districts. The Nine days festival on Badadanda fills the heart and mind of the devotees with religious sentiments as their faith goes like this ‘touching the rope of Ratha of Lord Jagannath would mitigate the pain of rebirth and immortal soul would mingle with great soul of greatest creator of this Universe’. Whatever may be the truth behind it, Ratha yatra or Ghosh Yatra of three deities are performed with religious fervour and enthusiasm which is simply beggar’s description. The construction of Huge chariot begins on the Akshaya trutiya (Shukla Trutiya of Baishakha) day.

The Ratha Yatra Schedule:

I. Netra Utsav-Ashadha Krushna Amabasya
II. Uvayatra-Ashadha Shukla Pratipada
III. Pahandi(Gundicha at Puri)-Ashadha Shukla Dwitiya
IV. Pulling of Chariots-Ashadha Trutiya & Chaturthi
V. Bahuda Yatra & Pahandi-Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi
VI. Pulling of Bahuda Chariots-Ashadha Dwadashi & Trayodasi

“Gundicha Yatra has been observed since 1575 A.D.The three deities arrive on the respective chariots after ‘Pahandi’.The pulling of the Chariots begins the next day.The 14-wheeled ‘Taldhwaja’(the chariot of Lord Balabhadra) moves first and reaches the ‘Mausi’ temple.Thereafter 12-wheeled ‘Devidalan’or ‘Vijaya’(chariot of Devi Shubhadra) is pulled only by ladies.Normally this chariot reaches half-way and stops near the town police station. With night fall pulling of chariots is stopped for safety and security reason.Next day at 2:00 P.M the pulling of chariots is resumed and ‘Devadalan’ reaches the destination. Then starts the “Nandighosh”(the massive chariot with 16 Wheels-largest of the three-of Lord Jagannath). With the accompaniment of resounding conch shells “Ghantas” the chariot Covers the distance majestically swaying both ways.On “Bahuda” Day, observed on Ashar Shukla Ekadashi the same rituals are performed and chariots pulling is completed in two days. As there is no space for the chariots to move around ,the reverse sequence is followed in the return journey-First starts “Nandighosh”, then Devadalan and then the “Taladhwaja”. Other facts & Legends associated with the Ratha Yatra:

Length of Badadanda from Shri Haribaldev Temple to Mausibadi is 3000ft.

Regarding ‘VESHA’ on different days while in ‘Mausi’s temple
A.1st day-Ananta Vasudev
B.2nd day-Luxmi Narayan
C.3rd day -Viswarupa Mahadev and Kaliya Dalan
D.4th day-Nrusingha & Kali
E.5th day-Baman and Kalaki

The Ambika temple, Baripada is an ancient temple and the Bijesthali of the presiding deity. People of Baripada strongly believe her as ‘The Living Goddess’, who as a mother showers her blessings to all the mankind.

Description

MAA’s Mantra:

OMM NAMO SHAILAPUTRI DAITYA DARPA VINASHINI
AVAYA VARADE MATA PUJA GHRUHANA SURESHWARI !!

Omm Namo Shailaputri Daitya Darpa Vinashini
Avaya Varade Mata Puja Ghruhana Sureshwari !!

Overview:

The Ambika temple, Baripada is an ancient temple and the Bijesthali of the presiding deity not only for the people of Baripada but also for the people of the whole Mayurbhanj district as well as devotees from the neighboring states like Jharkhand and West Bengal.

The temple is situated at the heart of the Baripada town.
People of Baripada strongly believe her as ‘The Living Goddess’, who as a mother showers her blessings to all the mankind.

MAA’s Idol :

The deity’s idol is made of fine marble stone which is ancient. The idol has four hands also known as “Chaturbhuja”.

Maa Ambika is sitting on a lion and in her four hands, she is holding Dambaru, Khadga, Kharpara and Trisula .

It’s also a famous belief among the devotees that though the mother is holding arms in her hand to fight with all the odds and save the mankind, her face is so calm, cool and glows vibrantly. As if mother is always looking at her children with a motherly affection. Whoever visit her in the temple and ask her blessings while looking at her, feels the divine touch.

In her temple Maa Ambika is surrounded by other deities like Adyapujya Vignaraj Ganesha, Parama yogi Ambikeswar mahadev, Sankatamochana Panchamukhi Hanuman, Graha dosa nibaraka naba graha, Mangalamayi maa mangala, Shri chandika and maha sasthi etc.

History:

Though the exact time and history of MAA’s emergence is not clear, however in the gazetteer and surveys on temple restructure and reform, viz. archeological surveys of mayurbhanj (1911) edited by notable archeologist of India, Late N.N. Basu and District gazetteer of mayurbhanj complied by eminent bureaucrat late Nilamani Senapati, it is mentioned that in the middle of the then baripada town, known as bagasamal gardh, there was a very small pitha (bijesthali) of Maa Ambika unattended and in a meager condition.

A temple for MAA was built at that time. The deity has no other immovable properties and assets except the bijesthali land.

From the Lagraj case #108, this information comes into picture that the then ruler of Mayurbhanj, Maharaja Krushna Chandra Bhanja, when got seriously ill by the incurable small pox disease at that time, he seeks the blessings of Maa Ambika to cure him from this deadly disease and for the seva puja of Maa, he has fixed Rs. 36/- per year, the revenue generated from Tilagadia Mauza in Kuliana gram in the last part of year 1800.

The present main temple is constructed by the then renowned Gujrati Contractor Late Walji Gobind. When his only son was seriously ill by the then incurable smallpox, he worshiped MAA and prayed her to cure his son and after his son got cured from this deadly due to MAA’s blessings, he re built this temple for Maa in 1920. In the due course of time, the current structure got extended and the temples for other deities inside the premises constructed with the help and donations of the devotees of MAA.

Dainik Puja Vidhi Of MAA:

The daily seva puja of MAA starts in early morning and performed in holiness and in a whole hearted manner by MAA’s priests with the sacred sound of sankha, ghanta and mrudanga played by the devotees.

In the special festive days, “Sodhasa Upachara” puja, “Chandi”, “Homa” etc. are performed in tantric as well as in Vaidik way as per the devotees’ requests and with their cooperation.

MAA’s Aarati:

Soon after the completion of the Aarati, starts the sankirtana by the devotees in a well composed manner that whoever listens it, start to chorus with a divine feeling.

Maa’s connection with the Baripada Jagannath Temple:

In many rituals performed in Baripada’s Jagannath temple, MAA’s presence and importance can be felt.
On the day of ‘Sunia’ in ‘Indra Dhwaja’ puja(a festival performed in Jagannath temple to please the god of rain, Indra), Maa Ambika’s pujaka along with MAA’s ‘Aagyanmala’ and ‘Khadga’ go around the ‘Dhwaja’and starts ritual after which only the puja starts.

On the starting day of Ratha Yatra, before the ‘Pahandi Bije’ of the three sibling deities to their chariots, Maa’s Pujaka comes with ‘Aagnyamala and ‘Khadga’ and perform the puja rituals which is known as ‘Ratha Prathistha’. This special tradition seen only in baripda’s ratha yatra is given equal importance like the ‘Chera Pahanra’ vidhi performed in Puri Ratha Yatra.

It is believed that in this way MAA is assuring the protection of the Rathas, the Ratha yatra as well as the devotees from all the unforeseen evil.
